1- where are you from?
I’m originally from Houston Texas but have been living in Austin Texas for the past 9 years. So the answer is TEXAS!
2- what do you do in the band?
I play Bass and do vocals.
3- what are your upcoming projects?
We are almost finished recording 8 songs that we plan to release as a 10”. We spent 2 and a half years writing these 8
songs and are really happy to have a second release out. We’re going on a West coast tour in January with our good friends
Adobe Homes. When we get back home from tour we plan to start writing new songs and hopefully record songs for
some splits or compilations.
4- tell us something that we don’t know but should know about your band.
All 4 members of For Want Of are in our late 20s and all love Thrash, including two of the best
Thrash bands in the world, Pantera and DRI, who happen to come from Texas. Coincidence?
I think not.
5- what bands do you like these days? what have you listened to today?
I really love Zola Jesus, she continues to put out the best records I’ve heard in a long time. I’ve been
listening to early 80s industrial bands like Test Dept and Laibach alot lately also. Pig Heart Transplant
is about the only modern industrial sounding band I’ve had a chance to listen to, Kortland (of Pig Heart Transplant)
and his circus of hardcore , powerviolence and noise freaks really know what they’re doing. Anything
spooky and dark sounding really does it for me so naturally newer stuff like Salem and White Ring, and
older stuff like Trisome 21 and Depeche Mode. I really love fast hardcore and powerviolence too, the new Sea of
Shit 7” is great, and the Dead Language LP is masterful, anything Hatred Surge puts out is always good,
and I love Iron Lung. I love 80’s and 90’s emo stuff like Rites of Spring, Moss Icon. Most of the time if I’m
listening to screamo it’ll be Yaphet Kotto. I’m a sucker for pop music too, stuff like Slowdive and Chapterhouse
are awesome. Today I started the morning off with Madonna’s song’s “Like a Prayer” and “Cherish” then
listened to My Bloody Valentine’s album “Loveless” and then New Order album “Technique”, After that
I listened to a mixture of a bunch or artists from the Sarah Records catalog, Sarah Records is a label
from Bristol England that put out the sweetest pop music from the lat 80s until the mid 90s.
6- do you have friends in bands or who run labels/zines that we should know about?
Hatred Surge from Austin TX, Chest Pain from Austin TX, Mindless from Austin TX, Wiccans from Denton TX, Sea of Shit from Chicago, SFN from Madison WI, Grasseaters from Oklahoma City, The Reptilian from Kalamazoo, Adobe Homes from Albuqueque, Colonia from San Antonio, Tentacles from San Antonio, Innards from Fort Worth TX, Big Fiction from Arlington TX, In Braille from Austin TX, and Completely Fucked from Fort Worth TX. Wes who plays guitar in For Want of runs Resuscitate Records in Austin, Zo who plays in Adaje runs a record label called Carucage out of Memphis TN, also Will from Raleigh NC runs To Live a Lie Records and My buddy Jeff runs a label called 1 6 OH Records.
7- why are you in a band and what do you want to accomplish in said band?
I love playing music and have alot of fun doing it. I want to write music that I would like even if I wasn’t in the band,
continue to tour and meet great like minded people, release an LP. Tour to Europe or Japan one day.
8- how did you decide upon your band’s name?
Rites of Spring is my favorite band so I wanted to name it a song name from their catalog. It’s common amongst
hardcore/punk bands to name their bands after songs or albums they really like and since we are a hardcore band
we wanted to follow suite with one of our favorite songs from one of our favorite hardcore bands. I think our guitarist
Adam agreed because of the meaning behind the phrase “For Want Of”, in that it alludes to the proverb, “for want of
a nail the war was lost”, which gets across the point that one little short coming could completely make the bigger
picture goal fail.
9- when was the last time you slept on a floor?
Last July in Miami during a tour I was on. If you count it I slept on the ground while camping at an outdoor music festival I played in November.
10- do you have anything more to say?
I host shows in Austin at my house, the house is called Slamalot, if any touring
bands that want to play a great DIY show in Texas I would love to have you play
at my house
